Q: Is it true that the American Dental Association has endorsed a chewing gum?
A: Yes. For the first time ever, the American Dental Association has given its Seal of Acceptance to a chewing gum. Wrigley's Orbit, Extra and Eclipse sugar-free chewing gums are the products that have won the well-trusted ADA seal. The gums are clinically proven to help fight cavities, strengthen teeth and reduce the build-up of plaque, the filmy residue that harbors bacteria. The seal means the ADA believes the products contribute to the maintenance of good oral health.
The ADA awarded the seal after analyzing nearly 20 years worth of independent scientific research that included both clinical and laboratory studies on the effects of chewing these sugar-free products. The ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs conducted the analysis.
The seal on the Wrigley's products, said ADA Executive Director Dr. James B. Branson, means people should know that chewing the gum is "doing more for their oral health than just freshening their breath." Branson said the products meet the ADA's criteria for safety and effectiveness and provide oral health benefits. Chewing these products, of course, is still no substitute for brushing and flossing twice a day and visiting your dentist regularly.
