Q: What is the ADA Seal of Acceptance?
A: The ADA Seal of Acceptance is your assurance that the American Dental Association has determined any product that bears it to be safe and effective. As far back as 1930, the ADA had established rigorous guidelines for the testing and advertising of dental products. And as early as 1866 the ADA had prepared a statement on toothpaste.
Manufacturers who want the seal on their product have to supply proof that supports promotional claims about safety and effectiveness. They must run clinical trials that comply with ADA guidelines and procedures. They also have to prove that their manufacturing facilities are properly supervised to assure safety and quality. All of their advertising, patient education and promotional material has to be approved by the ADA.
When the seal is awarded, it is generally good for three years. Manufacturers have to reapply to continue using the seal. Talk with your dentist as well about products he or she recommends.
