Q: What is glossitis?
A: Glossitis is the name given to a condition in which a person has persistent soreness or burning sensation in the tongue. The condition generally affects older people, and women more frequently than men. In some cases the burning sensation can occur in other areas of the mouth as well.
Since the condition occurs mostly in post-menopausal women, it's thought that the reduced production of the female hormone estrogen may be a contributing factor. Mouth dryness, a condition of its own called xerostomia, can cause the problem, as can vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly including deficiencies in vitamin B-12, folic acid and iron. Medical disorders like stroke and diabetes can contribute. Psychological stress from, say, bereavement or depression are also factors.
Treatment can consist of diet change and the use of supplements. A combination of medication and counseling may be used to ease stress or depression. Talk with your dentist about glossitis or any abnormal sensation you experience in your mouth.
