Q: What do I do in an emergency if I can't get to a dentist right away?
A: Here are a few tips on what to do in the event of some common emergencies:
- If you break a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water to keep the area clean. Apply a cold compress-ice wrapped in a towel, for instance-to hold down swelling.
- For a knocked-out tooth, retrieve the tooth. Holding it by the crown-the top of the tooth-gently rinse off the root. Don't scrub it or remove any tissue fragments that remain attached. If possible, put the tooth back in the socket. If it's not possible, put it in a container with milk or cool water.
- For a bitten lip or tongue, apply direct pressure with a clean cloth. If the bleeding won't stop, go to a hospital emergency room.
- If something is stuck between your teeth, try to remove it gently, either with a toothbrush or dental floss. Don't try to force it out with a sharp object.
Naturally, in all of the cases mentioned, contact your dentist as soon as possible for advice on the next step.
