Q: What is the purpose of the ADA seal?
A: For dentists and consumers the American Dental Seal of Acceptance is a trusted designation that a dental product is both safe and effective. Some 400 companies participate in the Seal program. They commit to a rigorous program of testing and evaluating products as to their safety and effectiveness. They have to provide objective data that testifies to whatever promotional claims they make. Manufacturers must also make clinical trials as required by ADA guidelines.
Roughly 1,300 products carry the Seal. About 40 percent of them are products sold to consumers, like toothpaste, toothbrushes and other dental appliances. The rest are products used or prescribed by dentists, like antibiotics or restorative materials. An ADA seal award is valid for three years. At the end of that time the manufacturer has to reapply. More than 100 experts, including members of the ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs and ADA staff scientists, conduct the reviews. Talk with your dentist for more information about the ADA seal and for advice on products you should use at home.
