Q: Do you have any special advice for senior citizens?
A: Every age has its special dental considerations. And seniors are no exception. It's especially important for seniors to visit the dentist at least twice a year. One reason is because the roots of teeth become more exposed as we age and therefore more susceptible to cavities. Exposed roots are also more sensitive to hot and cold, which in turn can affect diet. Anti-sensitivity toothpaste can help, but if you develop a sensitivity issue, check with your dentist to make sure it's not the result of decay or possibly a cracked tooth. Also, fillings can chip or weaken with age, again increasing the opportunity for decay.
Medications and other health conditions, both of which generally increase with age, also bear on dental health. So keep your dentist apprised of your medication regimen and overall health condition. And if you wear dentures, that's another reason for regular visits to the dentist. If the fit of your dentures has changed as you age, they should be adjusted because they can become uncomfortable and inflame gum tissue. So as you age, don't fall out of the habit of seeing your dentist.
