Q: What are dental implants?
A: For many people who are missing teeth, dental implants are an attractive option. In the implant procedure, a metal post is surgically placed in the bone under your gums, then, after a period of healing, a replacement crown is attached to the post. Implants are not, however, an option for everyone. Certain conditions must exist. Healthy gums and bone are necessary to support the post that is implanted. Also, because the placement of implants is a surgical procedure, a candidate must be in sound enough health to handle the surgery. Smokers and diabetics also may not be candidates for implants since both those conditions may have caused gums to deteriorate.
Implants can also be used to secure a bridge or dentures when more than one tooth is missing. Generally, a team of dentists is necessary when installing implants. One dentist, for instance, may do the surgery to put the implant in the bone and another may place the crown on the post. Talk with your dentist about whether you are a candidate for dental implants. And check with your insurance provider to see if the procedure is covered.
