Q: How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
A: You've probably started the New Year with a number of resolutions. Starting the year with a professional teeth cleaning is one that's well worth keeping. Most experts recommend a visit to the dentist and a cleaning at least once every six months. Think January and July. Any problem, like the beginning of a cavity, is much easier to treat if it's had no more than 6 months to develop.
For a cleaning, either your dentist or your dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, leaving them looking and feeling fresh. Getting all that build-up removed from along the gum line will dramatically decrease the likelihood of your developing gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Every year or two, your dentist may want to x-ray your teeth to make sure you're not developing any problems that are not visible to the naked eye.
Start off the New Year with a resolution to pay closer attention to your overall health. This should include making an appointment with your physician for a thorough exam, as well as with your dentist.
